Tile Problems and Solutions: Protect Your Floors and Walls
Tiles are widely used in homes, offices, commercial buildings and outdoor areas because they offer durability, design flexibility and easy maintenance.
However, improper installation, unsuitable adhesives, substrate movement and moisture penetration can affect their performance.
Understanding the cause of a tile problem helps prevent repeated failures.
1. Tiles Popping Up or Tenting
Tile tenting occurs when tiles lift or buckle, sometimes with a sudden popping sound.
This may happen due to thermal expansion, inadequate movement joints, substrate movement or poor bonding.
Solution: Inspect the affected area, correct the underlying cause and reinstall tiles using suitable adhesive and movement-joint detailing.
2. Cracked Tiles
Tiles can crack due to impact, substrate movement, excessive loading or inadequate support beneath the tile.
Solution: Assess and repair the substrate before replacing damaged tiles. Movement-related cracks may require additional treatment.
3. Hollow or Debonded Tiles
A hollow sound may indicate incomplete adhesive contact or loss of bond.
Solution: Remove unstable tiles, prepare the substrate and reinstall them using an appropriate tile adhesive with the required coverage.
4. Water Seepage Through Tiled Areas
Bathrooms, balconies and terraces may develop leakage through defective joints, penetrations or failed waterproofing.
Solution: Identify the leakage source, repair affected joints and reinstate waterproofing where required.
5. White Deposits on Tiles
Efflorescence can occur when moisture transports soluble salts to the surface.
Solution: Address the moisture source and use a suitable cleaning product compatible with the tile material.
6. Tile Stains and Discolouration
Incorrect cleaning chemicals, porous surfaces and grout contamination can affect tile appearance.
Solution: Choose suitable cleaners and protective treatments based on the tile type.
7. Uneven Tiles and Lippage
Uneven tile edges can result from poor substrate levelling, installation errors or tile warpage.
Solution: Improve substrate preparation, select suitable installation materials and follow proper levelling practices.
8. Cracked Tile Grout
Grout may crack due to movement, poor mixing, unsuitable materials or inadequate joint preparation.
Solution: Remove defective grout and replace it with an appropriate cementitious or epoxy grout. Movement joints should use suitable flexible sealants.
